Symphony without G is a conceptual score conceived by Genco Gülan. The work is based on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. Collaborating with composer Murat Cem Orhan, Gülan had removed G note from the entirety of the symphony. In the production process, the notes have been transformed and weeded out from the MIDI audio file via Sibelius 7 software. The experimental project has come to life with inputs from Ömer Ahunbay and Jingle House. The emphasis of the Symphony without G is built on the abundance of the homonyms found in the Turkish language. In Turkish, the note G corresponds to ‘sol’ which is an homonymous word, also corresponding to ‘left’. Thus it is both a musical note and a description of a political movement, an ideology. With his conceptual score, Gülan underlines how specifically in Turkey and generally on a global scale, in the World, the leftist ideology is becoming extinct. In case of an extinction of a single note among six others might not catch the eye. However in case of ideologies, when expressed like the descriptions of directions - right and left- the loss is substant ial. The first section of the score, consisting of 176 A4 pages, had been exhibited on a single wall at Genco Gülan’s solo exhibition, ‘Untitled’, at EKAV Art Gallery throughout February 2014. The entire score had been binded as a book and also was exhibited in the same exhibition. Four photographs that are featured in the book were taken at the Red Square of Moscow by Gülan. Symphony No. 1 has not yet been performed.
