Čeněk Zahradníček (1900–1989), "Man with a Camera", is known mainly as a respected pioneer of the Czech amateur film. He was one of the founders of the Prague Pathé Club, he was also an active amateur filmmaker and the amateur film promoter.

In 1981, Jiří Donné shot the film Služebníci černé dámy [Black Lady Servants] a tribute to the surrealism and avant-garde trends of the twenties and thirties, and which is also a tribute to Čeněk Zahradníček. [2]

Spolu s Vladimírem Smejkalem natočil své slavné filmy Atom věčnosti (1934), Ruce v úterý (1935) a hlavně pak film Příběh vojáka (1936). Právě tento film získal hlavní cenu na světové soutěži UNICA. V roce 1937 přechází k profesionálům na Barrandov, jako kameraman do filmového zpravodajství. Bohužel zde, se mu práce stává osudnou. V roce 1942 musí jít natáčet jak Němci likvidují Lidice. Po Únoru 1948 někomu vadil a tak použil tuto skutečnost k tomu, že musel Čeněk Zahradníček opustit práci ve zpravodajském filmu. Vrací se zpět k amatérům. Do důchodu pracuje jako archivář v Ústředním domě lidové umělecké tvořivosti. [3]

May was filmed as a backdrop to part of a theatre performance D36-D37 under the E. F. Burian´s lead inspired by the classic Czech poem of the same name by Karel Hynek Macha. Zahradníček figured as a cinematographer.

Verze, kterou natočil E.F. Burian s Čeňkem Zahradníčkem se v řadě ohledů lišila od Lehovcovy verze. Při její realizaci se E.F. Burian nechal ovlivnit surrealismem a dynamickými proměnami významů. Matoucí je nejen obraz nahého, v milostné křeči vzpínajícího se těla, ale i další scény a nakonec celý divácký zážitek. Na svou dobu bylo propojení filmových sekvencí s děním na jevišti vnímáno velmi provokativně.

• Ruce v úterý [Hands on Tuesday], 13 min, 1935. Collaboration with Vladimír Šmejkal. A witty day-in-the-life of a man, his fantasies, love life and all, shown through his hands. This film won what was, perhaps, the warmest reception of the evening. The motions of the hands symbolize the course of everyday. [7]
