Alexander Porfyrovych Archipenko (also Olexandr, Oleksandr, Aleksandr; Олександр Порфирович Архипенко; 30 May 1887 – 25 February 1964) was a Ukrainian avant-garde artist, sculptor, painter, printmaker, and teacher.

Archipenko about material and style

Als ich im Jahre 1912 zum ersten Male verschiedene Materialien in der Plastik anwandte, geschah dies, weil gewisse plastische Formen, die in meiner Vorstellung nach Verwirklichung drängten, mit den bisher in der Plastik benutzten Stoffen nicht verwirklicht werden konnten. Und sehr natürlicherweise war ich genötigt, für diese neuen Stoffe die neue Technik zu finden. Unter Berufung auf meine Erfahrung kann ich sagen, daß der neue Formenstil es ist, der andersartige Werkstoffe fordert, nicht aber umgekehrt die neuen Stoffe den neuen Stil schaffen. Ihre Handhabung ist das Ergebnis, nicht das Ziel.
Die moderne Kunst ist nicht nur Zusammenstellung einiger angestrichener Leisten, sie ist eine in Stil umgesetzte Leistung von Kräften des Geistes und der Vorstellung. Welche Materialien verwandt werden, ist an sich gleichgültig; Voraussetzung ist, daß das Material dem Stil völlig entspricht.[1]
