André Breton (1896 – 1966) was a French writer and poet. He is known best as the founder of Surrealism, with Paul Eluard, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. His writings include the first Manifeste du surréalisme of 1924. "SURREALISM, noun, masc., Pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations." (From Le Manifeste du Surréalisme, 1924 [1])
