Common Wall is a project for open appropriation that proposes a construction of a brick wall in the public space. The action aims to unite and exhibit works of different languages and backgrounds, creating also an invitation to anyone who wants to spontaneously participate.

On the first try the Special Secretariat of Public Order in the city of Rio de Janeiro obstructed the proposition. Once the officials approached the building site they found the activity completely absurd and were very upset about the fact that there was no legal authorization. The dialogue was difficult and emotional, and since it was a sui generis situation they had a hard time trying to deal with it. Although it was said that it was an art project and that we would clean everything afterwards, they were very aggressive and impatient. The Executive Secretary of Government Coordination of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro Office was consulted about how they should proceed, and it was decided to take it down and stop whatever was being done. Then another public organization — COMLURB (Municipal Company of Urban Cleaning) — was mobilized to do the job with them. After everything was cleaned, they all left the local. There were no fines or any other sanction imposed.

Project developed during the Casa Comum residency program. Rio de Janeiro, 2016.
