Born in 1962 in Vienna, where he studied Musicology, Electroacoustic Composition and Sound Engineering. He has been interested in scientific-technological as well as in artistic questions, and had been working for a period of seven years at the IRCAM/Paris, finally in the department leader's position of Interfaces et Representations des Sons. Since five years he has been working for the Institute of Mediacommunication at the Fraunhofer Institute/St.Augustin. Eckel is initiator and since 2001 coordinator of LISTEN, an international project, which explores the use virtual acoustic, predominantly in the field of art.
