Hilde Methi

Hilde Methi is a curator living in Kirkenes (Northeast Norway/Sápmi), where she was born. Her work investigates the relationship of her own locale to a larger geopolitical setting. She builds up ongoing collaborations and collectives infusing artistic ideas in local settings.

After leaving her position at Pikene på Broen in 2007, she conceived the Sámi Dáiddafestivála/Sámi Art Festival (2008–2010, 2012) in various places in Sápmi and the Barents Region; Dark Ecology (2014-2016, 2018) with Sonic Acts (NL), which over three years commissioned and presented temporary site-responsive artworks in the Norwegian-Russian border zone; co-founded the collectives Mobile Kultur Byrå (2006–), which looks at the trading climate in particular contexts, and Rural Reading Room (2012–2015), which highlights the materiality of the landscape using a tabletop as its format. Since 2020, she has been involved in the Academy of Rhythmorphology and The Mountain Body.

As a freelance curator she has commissioned artworks and curated exhibitions for several institutions including LIAF 2019 (2018-2019), which was awarded the Norwegian Art Critics' Prize for 2019; Hábmet Hámi / Making Form (Sámi Centre for Contemporary Art, 2018-2019); KORO (Ävv - Skolt Sámi Museum and Vadsø Ungdomssenter). She is involved in Bodø Biennale (2022, 2024) and curates an exhibition in Fotogalleriet in 2023.

She has a degree in Art history and Russian from the University of Tromsø (1994) and Creative Curating from Bergen National Academy of the Arts (2010).

She writes and has published and co-edited artist-books and anthologies, the most recent is The Kelp Congress (2020). (2022)
