Born 26 April 1922 in Haine-Saint-Pierre, Belgium. 1939 met the poets Achille Chavée and Andre Lorent and joined their Groupe de recherches surréalistes (Surrealist research group): Ruptures; discovered the work of Tanguy and started to paint, influenced by the work of René Magritte. 1947 turned towards abstract painting and entered the Jeune Peinture Belge (Young Belgian Painting) group. 1949 became a member of the CoBrA group at the same time as Pierre Alechinsky; quickly broke away from the group and committed himself to geometric abstraction. 1950 after seeing the Alexander Calder exhibition at the Maeght Gallery in Paris, began to move away from painting towards three-dimensional work. 1953 abandoned easel painting and made his first mobile reliefs, Les Plan mobiles (The moving planes). 1954 fitted his Plans mobiles with an electric motor, so that their movement would no longer be left up to the public. 1955 constructed three-dimensional Girouettes (Weathervanes), which could be moved by the wind or by people. 1957 constructed Multiplans [Multiple planes], his first mobile works driven by electric motors; co-founded the Daily-Bul magazine with André Balthazar; The Daily Bul later became a publishing house. 1961 moved to Paris. 1963 first Cinétisations: images manipulated by rearranging circular cut-outs. 1967 published the text "La boule et le cube" [The ball and the cube]. 1968 began to design and make pieces of jewellery. 1971 creation of the first Ramollissements [Blurrings]; retrospective exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York. 1973 moved into an old farm in Perdreauville, near Paris, with the space to build his monumental sculptures and fountains. 1980 fountain for the Guggenheim Museum, New York. 1983 became professor at Paris's Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (National School of Fine Arts), where he led a class in monumental sculpture until 1987. 1985 two fountains in the Palais-Royal gardens in Paris; received Paris's Grand Prix National de Sculpture (National Grand Prize for Sculpture). 1992 named a chevalier (knight) of the French Legion of Honor. 1994 fountain for the Tohoku University of Art and Design, Yamagata, Japan. 1997 Volumes figés and Papiers collés. 2001 Ramollissements virtuels: digital alterations of old masters' paintings. 2005 Pol Bury died on 27 September at the age of eighty-three in Paris.
