Renée Turner
Renée Turner is an American artist and writer living in the Netherlands. She received her MFA from the University of Arizona, was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie and a researcher at Jan van Eyck Academie.
Since 1996 she collaborates with Riek Sijbring and Femke Snelting under the name De Geuzen: a foundation for multi-visual research. As a collective, their works have been exhibited nationally and internationally at De Appel, Manifesta, the Bienal de Valencia and Stuk. Projects have also been featured in Rhizome, Mute and Thames and Hudson’s Internet Art.
Parallel to these activities, Turner has produced text-driven pieces for the web that engage in the idiosyncrasies of networked culture. Whether working individually or collaboratively, her projects often employ tactical media to explore female identity, narratives of the archive and online media ecologies. Interdisciplinary education has always been core to her activities. Over the past years, she has taught fine art, design and theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy, St. Joost Art Academy and the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. In 2006 she was awarded a scholarship from the Institute of Creative Technology and received an MA in Creative Writing and New Media from De Montfort University.
She served as the Course Director of the Piet Zwart Institute, Master Media Design and Communication: Networked Media (2010-11), since 2012 she is the Director of the Piet Zwart Institute.
