Mailing list and later on a broader online platform for the new media art community. Its initiator Mark Tribe started the project when he was living in Berlin in 1996.
In 1998 Rhizome was relocated to New York City and incorporated as a non-profit. In September 2003, Rhizome became an affiliate of the New Museum of Contemporary Art.
