As of 2016, the world's leading online platform for cyber-culture and the new media art community. Initiated by Mark Tribe in 1996, who started the project originally as a mailing list, when he was living in Berlin.

In 1998 Rhizome was relocated to New York City and incorporated as a non-profit. In September 2003, Rhizome became an affiliate of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, in which the Museum provides office space and some administrative and development support for Rhizome. Rhizome.org remains an independent 501 C3 organization registered in the state of New York.
