STEALTH.unlimited
STEALTH.unlimited (set up in 2000 by Ana Džokić and Marc Neelen) is a practice based between Rotterdam and Belgrade. STEALTH shape opportunities where various fields of investigation meet and where thinking about possible future(s) of the city are mobilized. STEALTH considers space both a tool and an agency, and focus on innovative aspects of sometimes hidden, temporary or unplanned urban practices that challenge ways in which to create physical aspects of the city and of its culture. In this, shifts of perspectives – from urban research, visual arts, spatial intervention, to cultural activism - are a key element. By creating devices that can take the form of a specific intervention in physical space, an occasion for exchange of knowledge, but also a piece of software, STEALTH produces test conditions to probe the shared authoring of urban space and culture.
STEALTH established or participated in a number of internationally published and exhibited projects on the complexity and inconsistency of the contemporary city, like Wild City (Belgrade), Urban Catalyst (Amsterdam), Adaptations (Apexart, New York and Fridricianum, Kassel), Challenging the Conservative Brain (Kunstverein Munich), Cut for Purpose (Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam), Europe Lost and Found (Western Balkans), Plans and Slums (Rome/Belgrade), Port City Safari (Rotterdam), Constitution for the Interim (The Netherlands), Cities Log (former Yugoslavia). STEALTH recently exhibited at the 8th Sao Paulo Architecture Biannual, 11th Venice Architecture Biannual (Italian Pavilion), TriPostal – Lille 3000 and thought a/o at Delft University of Technology, the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and the Center for Curatorial Studies at BARD University, New York or Polis University, Tirana.
In 2008 STEALTH co-curated with Saskia van Stein the Dutch Pavilion at the Architecture Biennial in Venice, with the project Archiphoenix: Faculties of Architecture. In the same year, with the Slovenian artists and architect Marjetica Potrc STEALTH completed the project Fruit and Energy Farms in a Public Square, a public art commission for a schoolyard in Knivsta, Sweden – that followed the residency at IASPIS in Stockholm. In 2009 STEALTH curated Episode 2 of the Tirana International Contemporary Art Biannual (T.I.C.A.B) - the first biannual’s contribution expanding beyond the filed of visual arts to include domains of city and urban transformation, and initiated the project Public City in collaboration with Radical Education at Moderna galerija, Ljubljana. In 2010 STEALTH curated IMPAKT festival: Matrix City in Utrecht, together with Kristian Lukic. STEALTH treats its curatorial works as interdisciplinary, multifaceted projects that involve large number of participants and experts in often dense collaborations - with the idea to contribute to contemporary knowledge production outside of expected institutional systems.
Over the years STEALTH collaborated with Milica Topalović, Ivan Kucina and Mario Campanella.
- Networked activities
From 1995-1998, Ana was co-initiator and co-ordinator of Projekt X, and independent art association based in Belgrade, Serbia. In 2002, STEALTH co-initiated the School of Missing Studies, an interdisciplinary network for experimental study of cities marked by or currently undergoing abrupt transition, based between New York, Rotterdam, Belgrade. Since 2005 STEALTH is a member and initiator of Centrala Foundation for Future Cities, which organised the Lost Highway Expedition (2006). CENTRALA initiated and coordinate the Lexicon for the Provisional Futures, an international project on notions and terms coming from the Western Balkans cities and urban culture of importance for the wider European context. The project involves a network of about 50 participants. In 2010 STEALTH co-initiated the platform Who Builds the City? (Ko gradi grad?), in Belgrade, Serbia.
