Impex - contemporary art provider was founded in October 2006 in Budapest as an independent initiative and space for collaboration and experimentation in art and cultural practices, social discourse and critical analysis.

Located at the intersection of alternative and institutional networks, Impex organised workshops, exhibitions, discussions, public interventions, publications, cooking sessions and other alternative methods of collecting, generating and sharing ideas and knowledge. The venue, a former residential building, consisted of a gallery space, a workshop space and an office.

Founding members and independent organisations were Gergely László (artist), Katarina Šević (artist), Hajnalka Somogyi (art historian and curator), Rita Kálmán (art historian and curator), Samu Szemerey (architect), Bence Buczkó (designer), Mónika Bálint (sociologist); Lumen - Photography Foundation; Dinamo - independent art space.
