Tommaso Campagna is a practice-based researcher in media studies, visual artist, and videographer.
He is currently a researcher and editor at the Institute of Network Cultures, part of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His work examines the technical and political dimensions of online video, publishing, and tactical media.
As an editor and producer at the Institute of Network Cultures, Campagna has produced a wide array of publications including: Video Vortex Reader #3 (2020), Post-Precarity Zine: Toolbox for Beginning Artists (2021), the Critical Meme Reader series (2021-2024), the Art in Permacrisis Podcast (2024-), as well as several volumes of the INC's Theory on Demand collection. He has also organized and coordinated a number of conferences and hybrid events such as: In-Between Media: Hybrid Tactics in The Crisis Era (March 2023); the Critical Meme Reader III Book Launch (May 2024), and the Expanded Publishing Fest events (January 2024; April 2024; October 2024; June 2025). He recently co-edited .expub: Exploring expanded publishing (2025), a book and web publication examining contemporary debates around experimental publishing.
Campagna also co-curates THE VOID, a research project and hybrid video studio that produces live streams, video essays, podcasts, and audiovisual publications in collaboration with artists, activists, and academics. Created in 2022, THE VOID has since produced a number of expanded video publications including hybrid events at diverse venues such as Locarno Film Festival, Hangar.org, Medialab Matadero, Roma Europa Festival, Aksioma, PixxelPoint Festival, and Yaga Festival (in collaboration with Lithuanian art collective 3022).
THE VOID’s key works include:
- ● The video research project Timeis.capital: Index on Self-Organisation in the Arts (2023) produced with the art collective of the same name—composed of Iskra Vukšić, Roman Tkachenko, Ekaterina Volkova, and Maisa Imamović—and media researcher Giovanni Rossetti, which documents self-organized art spaces in The Netherlands.
- ● The live stream event during Salwa’s Internet Cafe Exhibition (2023) at the Amsterdam artist-run space W139. This event was THE VOID’s first experiment in live streaming.
- ● The live streaming events series Tactical Video (2024-), an experiment on live online “television” programming focusing on the Amsterdam activist, art, and media research scene.
- ● The video publication The Kawayoku Inception (2024) with Noura Tafeche.
- ● The live video essays The Lure of War (2025) with Lesia Kulchynska and Ask Me for Those Unborn Promises That May Seem Unlikely to Happen in the Natural (2025-) with Donatella Della Ratta, both of them produced with Aksioma.
As part of THE VOID, Campagna is a founding member of the StreamArt Network, a European network of independent online media producers founded as a tactical media response to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As a visual artist, Campagna has supported global and local activist projects such as tracking.exposed, Money Lab, Exploit Pisa and Amsterdam Alternative. He is currently developing the print and web publishing project Discorsi, an initiative mapping the (g)local resistance movements in the Italian provinces of La Spezia, Massa, Carrara, and Lucca.
Other videographic works include the documentaries on the Amsterdam housing crisis Zonder Leraar. Help, de leraar vertrekt uit Amsterdam (Without Teachers. Help, Teachers are leaving Amsterdam) (2024) and Amsterdam, from Emancipation Machine to Sorting Machine (2021). Both produced with Jaap Draaisma, the latter film was exhibited as a video installation in the House Peace exhibition at the squatted Hotel Mokum in Amsterdam.
