Initially trained in classical arts, Jānis Garančs works in the genres of technological and algorithmic art, creating interactive multimedia installations and performances, virtual reality, videos, digital prints and mixed-material paintings.
His artworks draw inspiration from various concepts of contemporary theoretical physics, communication and evolution theories. They can be a mixture of dystopian and 'dark future vision' with a slight touch of humour on contemporary 'common' and 'digital' urban realities.
Since 2000, Jānis Garančs has focused on stereoscopic imagery and immersive 3D sound, as well as the combination of complex programmed and algorithmic structures with spontaneous gestures and live improvisation on stage. He has exhibited and presented his work internationally at venues and events including the Ars Electronica Festival (Linz), DEAF (Rotterdam), Transmediale (Berlin), ISEA (Helsinki in 2004, Montreal in 2020, Barcelona in 2022 and Paris in 2023), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the SAT (Society for Arts and Technology, Montreal), the RIXC Art and Science Festival (Riga), the Banff New Media Institute and the EXPO 2000 World Exhibition in Hanover.
