Founded in 1972, the Center for Media Study, since 1982 the Department of Media Study (DMS), at the State University of New York at Buffalo became one of the most influential schools for media studies in the United States. The Department was founded by Gerald O'Grady, and artist instructors included Tony Conrad, Steina and Woody Vasulka, Hollis Frampton, Paul Sharits, documentary filmmaker James Blue, and Peter Weibel.
