A German engineer and mathematician, the creator of format A4. His 1920 book Sprache und Schrift oriented the thinking in Bauhaus in the field of the typography. In the work, Porstmann envisions the universal language of humanity through writing, and among other things, advocates the abrogation of the capital letters to the advantage of lower cases—an idea adopted unconditionally by Bauhaus and proponents of the New Typography.
