Precession of Simulacra: 1. Sign faithfully depicts a fish. 2. Preparing fish distorts it, but it is still clearly recognizable as a fish. 3. Processing the fish into fish sticks completely conceals reality and creates doubt. Could it be chicken? The fish shape attempts to answer that question, but we can never be sure. 4. The Swedish Fish Oreo has no relation to actual fish. The arbitrary association between fish and gummy candy was manufactured by a candy company. To predict the flavor of the Swedish Fish Oreo, you must be familiar with the gummy candy and the oreo cookie. It's possible to understand the Swedish Fish Oreo signifier even if you don't know what a fish is, so long as you have tasted the Swedish Fish candy and can recognize it.
