James Johnstone (1870-1932) was an English oceanographer and experimental biologist.

Early in his career Johnstone a professor of oceanography at the University of Liverpool. He later became head of department in 1919 remaining in the position into his death. Johnstone was involved in the formation of the Journal of Experimental Biology, formed between 1923 and 1929.
