Michael F. Hauben (1973-2001) was an internet pioneer and author. Born in Boston, he was an early participant in electronic bulletin boards. He graduated from Columbia University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in computer science; following that, he entered the program Communication, Computing and Technology at Teacher's College and received a master's degree in 1997. Of particular interest to Hauben was understanding the democratization of the Internet and the participation of "netizens" (net + citizen) in the global community to build the Net.
