Ellen Johanne Røed is a visual artist and Vice-Chancellor, Professor of Film and Media at the Stockholm University of the Arts, where she leads the research project Image as Site. As a result, her work is both subject-specific and interdisciplinary. She serves on the steering group for VIS Journal, which she also was involved in initiating, as well as the KK Foundation's strategic council and ELIA's working group for Artistic Research. [1]

Ellen J Røed was educated at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, NTNU, and the University of Oslo. She has completed a PhD equivalent fellowship in the Norwegian Artistic Research Fellowship Programme. She worked at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, and the Bergen Academy of Art and Design (2004-2013), first as Assistant Professor and later as a Research fellow in Fine art. She was on the board of the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme, where she worked on establishing a national interdisciplinary research school, funding artistic research projects, and driving the strategic development of artistic research. She has also been central in organizing the Nordic Summer School for Artistic Research (SAAR).

She was part of Norwegian art collectives Verdensteatret (1995-1996) and Motherboard (1996-1998), and worked at the BEK - Bergen Center for Electronic Art (2002-2004).
