Jacob Heine is an Autistic photographer and designer. He was raised in Siem Reap (KH) and Sonneberg (GER). He is part of the bachelor's programme at the Bauhaus University Weimar (BUW). During his studies, he has been working as student assistant since 2023 , has given workshops, was part of the Qualifying Examination board of the VC BA programme and has worked closely with projects and musicians in Thuringia and Denmark. During and parallel to his studies, Heine has developed photo and artist books, working in photography and typography.
Jacob is set to attain his Bachelor's this summer with a photo book about the BUW's photoworkshop and its students being a central theme. Following several drafts and publications, his work has matured in combining sophisticated studio techniques, writing and drafting highly focussed concepts. Especially since producing his artist book "Es ist schwer, die richtigen Worte zu finden" (It is hard to find the right words), a book analysing a collection of condolence cards, Heine focusses his projects around the topic of Autism and its relation(s) to his profession, seeking to spread self-advocacy and representation rather than personal promotion.
Since 2024, Jacob has also been producing books at home, marking such publications under the label of "Al-Majnoun Books". These include "The Stripped Preacher: An Anthology of Songs from 2019-2024", a lyrics book he wrote under the pseudonym of Levi Ovesen, as well as "250 test strips", an upcoming artist book about paper scraps from working in the darkroom. Jacob sells these limited copies and at time sprints on demand, always merely asking for his production costs as a price but accepting donations, at times giving away small runs of publications for free. Tactics as these conform to his strong belief that books should not be expensive as well as that the material within is supposed to be distributed with as low a bar as possible. His current WIP, "Confessions of an Autistic ADOX-Drinker", is a collection of photographs and essays about the intersections of photography, political and philosophical theory as well as Autism and will be finished next week.
