'''Alberto Novello''' a.k.a. JesterN is an Italian scientist, composer, multimedia artist. His main artistic focus is directed towards the creation of probabilistic multi-media architectures, on the technological limit between instability and error, failure and expression. Lately he moved from digital systems to analog found or decontextualized electronic ensembles. He graduated in Nuclear Physics at the University of Trieste, completed the master “Art, Science and Technologies” with Jean Claude Risset and Claude Cadoz, he obtained a PhD degree at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven with Armin Kohlrausch and graduated in electroacoustic music composition at the Institute of Sonology, Royal Conservatory of Den Haag with Paul Berg, Joel Ryan, and Richard Barrett. In his works, he has assisted Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Nicholas Collins and Trevor Wishart. In the years he also worked Philips Research, Eindhoven, and Auro Technologies Belgium creating software for their audio application. His artistic works have been presented in international festivals such as Amsterdam Dance Event, Venice Biennale, Impuls Tanz Vienna, Seoul International Music Festival, Emu Fest Roma, Monaco Electroacoustique, New York Computer Music Festival, Rewire Festival and conferences such as NIME, ICMC, ISMIR, ICMPC, ICA, ICCE and ESSEM and institutes for contemporary music research such as CCMAS in Mexico, GRM in France, Logos Foundation in Belgium, STEIM Amsterdam, University of Urbana-Champaign, IEM Graz, OMI New York, the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag, Conservatory of Padua, Rome and Turin. He’s been invited professor at the University of Sussex, Uk and Tallin, Estonia. He was part of the Sonology Electroacoustic Ensemble and has released his works on CD/DVD as “JesterN’ for Dobialabel, Modisti, Bowindo, SONMA Archive and Hybrida records. He has improvised with Evan Parker and Butch Morris, Karl Berger and composed for the choreographies of Ola Maciejewska and Liat Waysbort. He is the artistic director of the AESON festival Italy and has received awards and grants from the Nederlands Fonds Podium Kunsten, Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, ResArtis together with Thamgidi Studio Fundation and Beijing Studio Center. He's part of the Federazione CEMAT for Electroacoustic Music in Italy and AIXIA, Italian Federation for Artificial Intelligence. (2020)

Alberto Novello a.k.a. JesterN ’s practice repurposes found or decontextualized analogue devices to investigate the connections between light and sound in the form of contemplative installations and performances. He repairs and modifies tools from our analogue past: oscilloscopes, early game consoles, analogue video mixers, and lasers. He is attracted to their intrinsic limitations and strong ‘personalities’: fluid beam movement, vivid colors, infinite resolution, absence of frame rate, and line aesthetics. By using these forgotten devices, he exposes the public to the aesthetic differences between the ubiquitous digital projections and the vibrance of analogue beams, engaging them to reflect on the sociopolitical impact of technology in a retrospective on technologisation: what ‘old’ means, and what value the ‘new’ really adds.

His works have been presented at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museo Reina Sofia Madrid, Amsterdam Dance Event, Venice Biennale, New York Computer Music Festival, Bozar Bruxelles, BOA Biennale Porto, Rewire Festival Den Haag, Glasgow Contemporary Art Center, IRCAM, STEIM, Dom Moskow, Seoul International Music Festival, Rome University of Fine Arts, to mention a few. He has released records for Staalplat, Bowindo, Elli Records, Dobialabel, Setoladimaiale, Ante-Rasa and Creative Sources.

He graduated in Nuclear Physics at the University of Trieste, completed the master Art Science Technologies with Jean Claude Risset, obtained a PhD degree at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven with Armin Kohlrausch, and graduated in Electronic Music at the Institute of Sonology, Royal Conservatory of Den Haag. He worked for Texas Instruments, Philips Research, and Auro Technologies creating software for their audio applications.

Hehas composed for the choreographies of Ola Maciejewska and Liat Waysbort. He's part of the Federazione CEMAT for Electroacoustic Music in Italy and AIXIA, Italian Federation for Artificial Intelligence. (2020)
