Espen Sommer Eide
Espen Sommer Eide (Tromsø, 1972) is a composer and artist based in Bergen, Norway.
Using music and sound as a starting point, his works investigates themes ranging from the linguistic to sensory biology, often resulting in long-term engagement with a specific site or culture. In addition to installation and performances, he has been a prominent representative of experimental electronic music from Norway, with main projects Alog and Phonophani, and a string of releases on labels such as Rune Grammofon, FatCat and Hubro. Alog's album Miniatures was awarded the Norwegian Grammy-award (Spellemannprisen) in 2005. In 2007, Alog was nominated for the award with the album Amateur.
His works has been exhibited and performed at Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen Assembly, Manifesta Biennial, Henie Onstad kunstsenter, Stedelijk Museum, De Halle Haarlem, Sonic Acts, Mutek festival, GRM/Presences Électronique, Performa Festival, Museo Reina Sofia and more. Eide is also a member of the theatre/art collective Verdensteatret, involved especially with building instruments, composing music and sounddesign. Eide has also been involved in a series of net art projects with various topics connected to the Barents and arctic regions of Northern Norway, under the heading of "rural readers". In addition to making music and art, Eide also directed the Trollofon electronic music festival in Bergen (2001-2006), and worked as artistic developer at BEK (Bergen Center of Electronic Arts).
