Alternative Film/Video 2018 catalog Cover Page

The catalog of Alternative Film/Video Festival Belgrade 2018 edition with the theme of "COLLECTIVism". Catalog presents over 70 alternative, innovative, experimental, avant-garde, personal, political films and video works from more than 30 countries. In the competition program there are new works by Igor Simić, Vivian Ostrovsky, Mike Hoolboom, Allan Brown, Benjamin & Stefan Ramirez Perez, Derek Woolfenden, Anne-Marie Bouchard, Igor Toholj and many others, while in the non-competition regional program South by Southeast works by artists such as Diana Vidrascu, Ivan Ramljak, Davorin Marc, belit sağ, Armando Lulaj, Peter Lichter, Vladislav Knežević are presented.

The artist duo Doplgenger (Boško Prostran and Isidora Ilić) formulated the concept of COLLECTIVism and selected the works for the international competition program, while independent curator Greg de Cuir Jr selected works for the survey program South by Southeast. The international jury consists of the British film artist Scott Barley, Gerald Weber, curator from sixpackfilm in Vienna, and Gordana Nikolić, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vojvodina.

Barley presents a selection of his short films and also his 2017 feature Sleep Has Her House. The artist Rouzbeh Rashidi from Dublin presents his 2018 experimental feature Phantom Islands. Spanish curator and archivist Almudena Escobar López brings a selection of works by the radical Mexican film collective Los Ingrávidos who deal with the dismantling of the codes of television and corporate visual aesthetics. The founders of the festival Images Contre Nature in Marseille present the program All We Need featuring films from their rich festival archive.

Among the retrospective and archival programs, jury member Gerald Weber curated Beyond Cinema, a selection of 16mm Austrian underground films from the 1960s and early 1970s (including work by Kurt Kren, Peter Weibel, Friedl vom Gröller and others), while Gordana Nikolić selected a number of works from the rich tradition of film and video practice in the Northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. Two historically important festivals for Yugoslav alternative and experimental film artists are explored. The Berlin-based curator Tobias Hering brings a selection of significant yet neglected 35mm Yugoslav works from the archive of the pioneering short film festival in Oberhausen (Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen). The cineastes Nikola Đurić, Ivko Šešić and Sava Trifković celebrate the memories of IF STAF, a festival that was a precursor to Alternative Film / Video, launched by Academic Kino Club in Belgrade in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The festival presented two exhibitions: in the Main Gallery "stills from a film that is missing: promises of a New Form#, organised by the Swiss artists-curators Raphaël Cuomo and Maria Iorio, dedicated to the history of kino clubs in Tunisia, and in the Small Gallery the monographic exhibition Layers of Self by the Belgrade artist Marta Jelena Glišić.

A cinematic VR (virtual reality) workshop was realised in cooperation with the Trieste Film Festival, by the Italian artist Antonio Giacomin Fluido and sound designer Massimiliano Borghesi, who introduced participants to the principles of cinematic VR.
