Lipsius (1547-1606) authored De bibliothecis syntagma, based primarily on the writings of classical Greek and Roman authors, it surveyed the libraries of antiquity by describing their locations, buildings, storage methods, and, to a small extent, their contents. It would become the prototype of general library histories for the next 250 years. [1]
