Machiko Kusahara Ph. D, is a professor at School of Culture, Media and Society, Waseda University, in Japan. She is a scholar in media art and theory who has published and curated in interdisciplinary field connecting art, science, technology, culture, and history. Since early 1980s she has given lectures and published texts extensively on digital media art and culture. Her research activities focus on intersection of media technology and Japanese culture such as Device Art (MediaArtHistories, MIT Press, 2007), panorama (Panorama Phenomenon, Mesdag Panorama, 2006), and utsushi-e (Japanese traditional magic lantern show). Kusahara served as a jury for Ars Electronica, SIGGRAPH, ISEA, to name a few, and was involved in launching NTT/ICC and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Her texts are included in ''The Robot in the Garden'' (MIT Press) and ''Art&Science'' (Springer) among others.

Currently Prof. Kusahara’s major activities are on two related fields: Device Art and Japanese history of visual entertainment from the 19th century. Device Art is a project that focuses on developing and theorizing a new form of media art that connects art, technology, design and products, with five-year grant from JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency). In the field of media history her research topics include magic lantern (utsushi-e) and panorama among others. The interplay between art, technology, culture and society has been the theme of her research.

Machiko Kusahara is a scholar in media art, digital media culture and media history. She is a professor at Waseda University, Tokyo, and holds a Ph.
