Morten Søndergaard is Associate Professor and Senior Curator of media and sound art at Aalborg University. MA in Modern Culture and Art History (University of Copenhagen) and PhD in Performance Design (University of Roskilde). He is co-founder, national coordinator and member of the Coordinator Board / faculty of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Media Arts Cultures (with Lodz University Poland, Krems University Austria, and LaSalle Singapore). Since 2012 faculty member of the Media Art Histories master in Krems, Austria. he was Curator (& periodically Deputy Director) at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde (1999–2008) curating several sound and media art exhibitions and projects: SoundImage V: Fylkingen (1999), The Augmented Reality Project (2000), Christian Marclay: Sound and Video (2000), Royal Collage (2001) (w. Mette Marcus), Under Cover - Sound Art in Social Spaces (w Mette Marcus) (2002), SeeSound (2002), Mellem Ørerne - PERformer Højholt (2003), Get Real - Real Time + Art (2004) (with Björn Norberg and Perttu Rastas), MAP – Media Art Platform (2003-08) (with Mogens Jacobsen). Head of the Culture Denmark advisory board and member of the New Media Forum, both hosted by the Danish Minsitry of Culture (2003-07). Co-founder and board-member of the LARM audio archive research infrastructure project 2002-2014, where he also founded and chaired the research project on ‘the unheard avant-garde’ (on-going). Together with Peter Weibel, he curated the ‘Unheard Avant-garde in Scandinavia’ section at the Sound Art – Sound as Medium for Art exhibition at ZKM, Karlsruhe, March 2012–January 2013. In 2010, he commissioned Stelarc’s Internet Ear Project for the exhibition Biotopia – Art in the Wet Zone at Utzon Center in Aalborg Denmark. He was Senior Curator and General Chair of the re-new festival of digital arts – www.re-new.org – in Copenhagen (2010–12). Co-founder and chair of ISACS – the sound art curating conference series (with Peter Weibel) (since 2013). Co-founder and chair of POM – Politics of the Machines conference series (with Laura Beloff) (since 2017). Contributing Editor at LEA (2011–14), and at MEDIEKULTUR (2014-16), he has published widely on media art, sound art and the digital archive experience in English and Danish since 1995.
