Dr. Suzana Milevska is a theorist and curator of visual art and culture based in [[Skopje]], Macedonia. Currently she teaches history and theory of art at the Faculty of Fine Arts – University Ss. Cyril and Methodius of Skopje. From 2006 to 2008, she was the Director of the Center for Visual and Cultural Research at the Euro-Balkan Institute in Skopje and she taught Visual Culture at the M.A. Programme in Gender Studies. She holds a PhD in visual culture from Goldsmiths College-London. In 2004, she was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Library of Congress. Since 1992 she curated over 80 international exhibitions, conferences and other projects (in Skopje, Istanbul, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Bonn, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Vienna, etc.) She was one of the national coordinators for the International Istanbul Biennale (1995-1999), and for the Thessaloniki Biennale (2005) and one of the co-curators of the International Contemporary Art Biennial at the National Gallery in Prague (2005) with “The Workers’ Club”.

Her research and theoretical interests span from postcolonial critique of representational regimes of hegemonic power in art and visual culture, construction of visual memory in photographic imagery and institutional or private archives, art practices in postsocialist and transitional societies, history of exhibitions addressing gender difference and feminist art, as well as collaborative, participatory and activist art practices in marginalized communities. Most recently she was Principal Investigator of the project Transmitting of Contentious Cultural Heritages through the Arts (TRACES) in the frame of the EU program Horizon 2020 Polytechnic University Milan, from 2016 to 2019. Milevska was appointed the first Endowed Professor in Central and South Eastern European Art Histories at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna (2013-2015). She was teaching in parallel visual cultures at the Technical University in Vienna (2013-2016). From 2010-2012 she taught art history and theory of visual art at the Faculty of Fine Arts – University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. From 2006 to 2008, she initiated and was the Director of the Center for Visual and Cultural Research at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Institute “Euro-Balkan” in Skopje and she taught Visual Culture to M.A. students in Gender Studies. In 2013 and 2018 she was a visiting lecturer in Visual Culture and Gender at Gender Studies Department, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje.  
  
Her interdisciplinary project “The Renaming Machine” (2008-2010) consisted of series of exhibitions and conferences (Ljubljana, Skopje, Pristina, Zagreb, Vienna, etc.) that resulted with the book The Renaming Machine edited by Milevska (P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute, Ljubljana, 2010). She was a researcher for the projects “East Art Map” (initiated by IRWIN, 2001-6) and “Gender Check” (curated by Bojana Pejic, MUMOK, Vienna, 2009-10) and for “Call the Witness – Roma Pavilion”, at the 54 International Art Exhibition –Venice Biennale-Collateral Event, 2011 and curated the exhibitions “Call the Witness”, BAK, Utrecht, and “Roma Protocol” at the Austrian Parliament. Recently she published her book Gender Difference in the Balkans (Saarbrucken: VDM Verlag, 2010).

Milevska holds a Ph.D. in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths College in London (2006) and she was a Visiting Tutor at Goldsmiths (2003 to 2005). In 2004, she was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Library of Congress. Her publishing records range from critical reviews and theoretical texts in art magazines, peer reviewed academic journals and exhibition catalogues to chapters in academic publications and editing and publishing individual books. Institute, 2010) and ''On Productive Shame, Reconciliation, and Agency'' (Sternberg Press, 2016) and published her book ''Gender Difference in the Balkans'' (Saarbrucken, Germany: VDM Verlag, 2010). Milevska is a member of the Advisory Boards of the journals World Art, Routledge, Zivot Umjetnosti, Zagreb, and ArtMargins. She is a member of AICA (since 1995), IKT (since 2005) and AAMC (since 2017). Currently she lives and works as independent scholar in Skopje, with her partner –  the artist Saso Stanojkovik.
