The ACUD is one of the few remaining independent art houses that were founded in East Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The building has been used for many purposes in its 130-year history, including as a furniture factory, basket maker, carting company and dairy.

In 1991, the empty building was given to a group of artists who founded the Kunsthaus ACUD there.

After renovation and interim insolvency, its existence as an independent cultural venue was secured in 2014 with the help of a private initiative. Today, the ACUD houses five venues on 1,500 square metres: theatre, cinema, club, studio and gallery. The building in Berlin-Mitte also houses a bar, three schools, a radio station, the offices of two festivals and several studios.

In 2021, mechanical ventilation was installed in the small cinema and the theatre. (2023)
