The European Media Art Festival (EMAF) is organised by Experimentalfilm Workshop e.V. in Osnabrück since 1988.

The festival sees itself as a place of experimentation and a laboratory where extraordinary works, projects and ventures are created and presented. As a meeting point for artists, curators, distributors, galleries and the audience the festival has a great impact on the topics and aesthetics of Media Arts. Each year the festival offers its visitors a current overview of experimental films, installations, performances, digital formats and hybrid forms, ranging from personal and political subjects to formal experiments. Three prizes are awarded each year at the EMAF: the EMAF Media Art Award of German Film Critics (VDFK), the Dialogue Award of the Federal Foreign Office and the EMAF Award.

EMAF has its origin in a workshop for experimental films at the Department of Media Studies at the University of Osnabrück. This resulted in a film meeting in 1981: the so-called "Experimental Film Workshop", and the foundation of the association of the same name, which is still the sponsor of the EMAF today. In 1988, the "Film and Television Year" proclaimed by the EU offered the opportunity to put the festival on a new footing. The team of students put together a new concept for this - under the title "European Media Art Festival". (2020)
