Eugène Ionesco (born Eugen Ionescu, 26 November 1909, Slatina, Romania - 28 March 1994, Paris, France) was a dramatist whose one-act “antiplay” La Cantatrice chauve (1949; The Bald Soprano) inspired a revolution in dramatic techniques and helped inaugurate the Theatre of the Absurd. Elected to the Académie Française in 1970, Ionesco remains among the most important dramatists of the 20th century.
