Dziga Vertov From “The Laboratory of Hearing” to “Enthusiasm” - Sound in early nonfiction film.pdf

Dziga Vertov is widely regarded as a master and pioneer in early documentary filmmaking. His films have been scrutinized and studied around the world and stand for their innovation both in technical advancements and theoretical content. Perhaps lesser known are his pioneering experiments with sound in the early part of the 20th century, subsequently explored throughout his filmmaking career which informed many of his documentary films.


I have an academic background in Sound and Art and this essay is part of the research I took as an MA Documentary Film student. It is an interdisciplinary look at Verto's work through a sound perspective.

My conclusions are pretty much open for debate.
