Giovanna Zapperi

Giovanna Zapperi is full professor for art history at Université de Genève (since 2021). She received her doctorate from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris in 2005.

Her work examines the interrelation of art criticism, visual culture and feminism. She has published numerous studies in anthologies, exhibition catalogues, and reviews in France and abroad (Afterall, Art History, Les Cahiers du MNAM, e-flux journal, Feminist Review, Kritische Berichte, May, Oxford Art Journal, Texte our Kunst, Perspective, …), as well as critical articles. Her dissertation on Marcel Duchamp received the "Prix de la ville de Paris pour les études de genre" (City of Paris Award for Gender Studies), and was published in 2012 (L'artiste est une femme. La modernité de Marcel Duchamp, Paris, PUF). From 2005 to 2009, she was on the editorial board of the journal Multitudes; from 2007-2009, a visiting Rudolf Arnheim Professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin; and in 2009, a research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Nantes. In 2010, she became a faculty member of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Bourges, where she has taught the history and theory of contemporary art, and has organised the conference L’avenir du passé: politiques de l’archive/The Future of the Past: The Politics of the Archive. In 2013–14, she was a fellow at the French Academy in Rome (Villa Medici) where she researched on the criticism and art historical work of radical Italian feminist Carla Lonzi (1931–1982). In 2017, she published the book Carla Lonzi: Un'arte della vita (Rome, Derive Approdi). From 2017-2021, she was a full professor for History of modern and contemporary art at Université de Tours. In 2019 with Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez she curated the exhibition Defiant Muses at Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. In 2020-2021, she was the Rudolf Wittkower fellow at Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max Planck Institute for Art history. (2025)
