Matej Vakula (1981, Žilina) is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, specializing in data visualization, biology and urban issues. In his work, he studies the ways in which the public space is used and politicized. His artistic research is based on the do-it-yourself or the open source principle applied in the public sector, reflecting on such subject matters as safety, freedom, the global and the local, privatization, the political and the personal etc. Through his projects based on utilizing the means of artistic intervention, performance, radical archive geography, sharing, software and internet art, he aspires to contribute to a positive social transformation of the society.

Recently he was an artist in residence at Center for Molecular Imaging and Nanotechnology at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center and research fellow at the Public Lab and a member of community bio lab Genspace.
