Timothy Barnard is a film historian, translator and the proprietor of publishing house Caboose Books based in Montreal.

Barnard holds a B.F.A. in Cinema Studies from Concordia University in Montreal, an M.A. from the University of Iowa, and pursued a Ph.D. in comparative literature at the University of Chicago. Between his B.A. and M.A. degrees he did his own archival research and writing and editing, mostly on Latin American cinema. He has edited a monograph on Argentine cinema (1986), a critical filmography of South American Cinema (1996), translated a memoir of the tango (1988), and prepared a three-hour radio documentary on political film censorship West, East, and South (CBC Radio IDEAS, 1985). He has also managed international film and human rights projects and worked as a translator, interpreter, and English as a Second Language instructor. Since the 2000s, his work has focused on early cinema, French cinema between the wars and the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. For Caboose Books he has translated a selection of essays from André Bazin's What is Cinema? (2009), Jean-Luc Godard's Introduction to a True History of Cinema and Television (2014) and a number of other works.
