Genco Gulan is a contemporary conceptual artist, who defines his practices in painting, sculpture, performance, video and new media as ‘idea art’. Gulan was born in Istanbul in 1969. He spent his childhood in Frankfurt, Bodrum and Izmir. He studied at Bogazici University and got his MA degree at New School, New York. He got his first art prize from BP in 1993, won EMAF with a team in 2005, selected as a finalist for Sovereign European Art in 2011, awarded Master Artist at Ege Art in 2015 and got IGA Art Prize in 2023. His works are presented in museums such as; Centre Pompidou Paris, Pera, ZKM Karlsruhe, MAM Rio de Janeiro, La Triennale di Milano, Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum, Troya and Cer Modern. He participated to festivals such as; Steirishes Herbst, Ars Electronica, Mediaterra, prog-me, Balkan Art Novi Sad, Bonn Biennale, Komagene and Mediterranean Biennial. His performances are presented at Istanbul Theatre Festival, PAP Tel Aviv, Wunderbar New Castle, Fringe New York, Moving Silence Athens and Accente Festival Duisbug. He is in collections such as Rhizome.org at the New Museum, Istanbul Modern, Elgiz, Baksı, Museum Oswald, Davis Museum, MoMUS Thessaloniki, Xylography Museum and Imago Mundi Luciano Benetton. His works listed in required reading lists such as; City University, Rice University Texas, U.C. Santa Barbara and Universitat Hamburg. Gulan gave conferences at Yale, School of Visual Arts New York, Köln, Bilgi, NYIT and Incheon University. His books are in Libraries such as MoMA, Salt Galata, Vakko and Metropolitan Museum. Genco Gulan was in the Advisory Board of Balkan Biennial Cosmopolis and in the International Programming Committee of ISEA Singapore. His public works are on exhibit in the parks of Besiktas and under the sea in Bodrum. He is the founder of the istanbumuseum.org and the Web Biennial. Gulan teached in Mimar Sinan Academy and Bogazici University, Istanbul. Currently he lives and works in Izmir and Istanbul.
