Roel Roscam Abbing (1990, NL) is currently pursuing a PhD in Interaction Design at Malmö University’s School of Arts and Communication (K3). There he researches alternative social media, on-line federation and community-owned digital infrastructure. Furthermore, he works as an artist and media designer with a highly collaborative practice that engages with network infrastructures, the politics, and materiality of technology, do-it-yourself approaches and self-organization.

He holds an MA Networked Media from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and a Fine Arts BA (Hon) from the Willem De Kooning Academy. He has previously worked as a lecturer in Digital Media at the department of Graphic Design at Artez, Arnhem, as a lecturer in the Hacking and Digital Craft programmes of Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam and taught freestanding workshops and courses at Design Academy, Eindhoven.

He is one of the founding members of Varia in Rotterdam. (2022)
