Felix Stalder (1968) is dividing his time between working as a professor of digital culture and network theories at the Zurich University of the Arts (Media Arts Program which he co-directs) and as an independent researcher/organizer with groups such as the Institute for New Cultural Technologies (t0) in Vienna.
He has been working in this area since the mid-1990s. At the end of the 1990s, he was pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto (completed in 2001), then as a post-doc with the Surveillance Project, a transdisciplinary research initiative based in the Department of Sociology, Queen's University in Kingston, ON, Canada (completed in 2002). Since 2003, he has been a part-time faculty member in Zurich.
Since 1998, he has been moderating the Nettime mailing list together with Ted Byfield. In 2000 he co-founded an open source R&D firm headquartered in Toronto, Openflows.org, with Jesse Hirsh. Edited newspapers with Public Netbase/t0. Co-organized Open Cultures (2003), Free Bitflows (2004), Wizards of OS (2004, 2006) and World-Information City (2005) conferences. Lives in Vienna and Zürich.
