mur.at - initiative netzkultur was founded by Reni Hofmüller, Wolfgang Reinisch, Winfried Ritsch and Jogi Hofmüller in 1998. Based in Graz. Member of Konsortium Netzkultur, RIPE-NCC, ISPA - Internet Service Provider Austria, IG Kultur.

‘mur.at' operates a server farm in Graz (Austria) and is connected to the global network via ACOnet (Austrian Science Network).

The NETWORK ‘mur.at' is a virtual, constantly expanding platform of artists and cultural workers from different sectors for the development and promotion of network culture, Web-Art, Sound Art, Software Art and Media Art in general.

The INITIATIVE ‘mur.at' is committed to technology development using Free/Libre & Open Source Software. Difference-forming media diversity, unrestricted flow of information and transparent knowledge transfer form the core content parameters of the NETWORK INITATIVE.

The TEAM ‘mur.at' is organized as a self-administered, non-commercial company and forms the infrastructural basis (backbone) for the work of the ‘mur.at’ COMMUNITY at a high technical level. ‘mur.at’ creates conditions and expands the possibilities for net-art and digital culture.

The server farm offers Open Source Web-tools to its members

  • - Webserver
  • - Domain|SubDomain
  • - Housing
  • - Webmail
  • - MailManLists
  • - Cloud Storage
  • - Etherpad
  • - Jitsi and other VoIP tools

Besides the virtual tools ‘mur.at’ maintains the KünstlerInnenwohnung, an apartment that members can use to accomodate short-term guests who come to Graz.

Besides the provided tools and basic infrastructure for arts&culture, ‘mur.at' organises a yearly artistic program that includes an Artist in Residence Program, Worklab, radio program 'Netzrauschen' , exhibitions, workshops, events, amongst others.

On-site and virtual Artist in Residency program offer the opportunity to develop and adapt existing artworks, infrastructure and possible assistance within the ‘mur.at' community to research, develop ideas, collaborate with others and produce digital artworks. On-site Residency artists are accommodated in the KünstlerInnenwohnung located in the same building as the ‘mur.at' office for the onsite residency in Graz (Austria).

Worklabs are “unconferences” lasting several days, to which open calls are invited. Mur.at creates a temporary space in which local artists, technicians as well as guests and experts can discuss topics from the field of digital technology, art and their social implications. People from different fields and with different backgrounds meet and work together on ideas and drafts that become the starting point for future projects, publications and productions of the current and coming year. The worklabs are therefore both incubators for concrete work and open space for discussion, where ideas, tools, practical and creative approaches are developed and tested.

Netzrauschen is the radio program / podcast on various topics related to digital society, art and (free) technologies. The series is edited by people from the ‘mur.at' community, with changing international guests. Since 2020 the program is broadcasted at 'Freies Radio Helsinki' and archived in the 'CBA - Cultural Broadcasting Archive'.

Since 2017 members are invited once a year to participate in a solidarity membership campaign (SoMiBe - Solidarischer Mitgliedsbeitrag) to partly cover ongoing costs.
