First published in Art in America in 1965, Barbara Rose’s “ABC Art” reports on a “new sensibility” evident in the work of artists ranging from Yvonne Rainer to Andy Warhol. Rose pays particular attention to what she calls the “empty, repetitious, uninflected art” being produced by dancers, musicians, writers, sculptors and painters. This much cited article was one of the first critical attempts to explain and contextualize the kind of art work that would be labelled "minimal" or "conceptual".
