André Breton (1896–1966) was a French writer and poet. He is best known as the founder of Surrealism, with Paul Éluard, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. In 1924 he published his Manifeste du surréalisme.
"SURREALISM, noun, masc., Pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations." (From Le Manifeste du Surréalisme [1924], 1971, [1].)
