Verena Kuni is a scholar in art theory and history, cultural and media studies and professor for visual culture at Goethe University Frankfurt (Main). Since 1996 she has been researching and teaching at universities and art academies in Germany and beyond, including numerous teaching assignments, guest lecture- and professorships, as well as lectures, talks, workshops and panels at international conferences and other events. Numerous international research cooperations and projects.

She has studied art history, literature and media studies as well as psychology (focus on perception and cognitive science) at Philipps-University Marburg and at the University of Hamburg. Master of Arts (Magister Artium) in 1992 with a master thesis on surrealism and hermetism (focussing on the french-rumanian artist Victor Brauner). Ph. D. thesis (Phil. Diss.) in art history on the creation of artist's myths and artistic references to esoteric traditions in modern and contemporary art. Research grants from Philipps-Universität Marburg and from Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.

From 2001 to 2005 she has been assistant professor, researcher and lecturer at the University of Mainz (now Art Academy, former Dept. Fine Arts, Art Theory), the University of Trier (Dept. Art History; ibid. also coordinator for Interdisziplinäre & Interkulturelle Geschlechterstudien), the Academy of Music and Performing Arts (Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst) Frankfurt am Main and the Institute for Media Studies (Institut für Medienwissenschaften, ifm) at the University of Basel (Switzerland).

Additionally, she held teaching assignments and guest lectureships at universities and art academies in Germany and beyond; a. o. at University of Saarland, Goethey University Frankfurt, Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, TU Technical University Darmstadt, University of Basel (Switzerland), Bergen Art Academy (Norway), Vienna Art Academy (Austria), HfG Offenbach, ZHdK University of Arts Zurich (Switzerland) as well as other teaching assignments in educational organisations.

Her research and projects are dedicated dedicated a. o. to transfers between material and media cultures; media of imagination; technologies, aesthetics and politics of transformation; (in)visibilia; DIY cultures; information and knowledge design; toys and/as tools; urban biotopes and technonaturecultures; alternate realities; (trans)formations of time.

Her curatorial work is focussed on interdisciplinary projects and formats at the intersection of theory and practice. She as also curated exhibitions as well as film & video programmes and screenings. During her times as a student she has been an active member of the Student's Film Club Marburg. From 1995 to 1999 she has been co-curator at the Kassel Documentary Film & Video Festival, where since 1999 she is director of the interdisciplinary conference for art, media and network cultures, interfiction.

Since the early 1990s, she has developed as well as co-founded several media and network projects in the field of digital and analogital culture, a. o. as member of international networks (a. o. The Thing BBS, OBN) as well as with individual projects. She has worked on the concept and development (incl. coding) of several media and network projects and platforms.

As a writer she has not only published several books and numoerous academic articles, since 1989 she is also a regular contributor to international art and culture journals, magazines, and other media print and online; a. o. Kunst-Bulletin (Zurich), spike (Vienna), Frieze (London), Eikon (Vienna), Camera Austria (Graz), neue bildende kunst (Berlin), Texte zur Kunst (Cologne, now: Berlin), SpringerIn (Vienna), Missy Magazin (Hamburg, now: Berlin), net magazines like Telepolis, BlitzReview).

Since 1997 she is regularly on air with her own art radio show, GUNST; and she is also an active contributing member of the international art radio network radia.fm.
