Origin[edit]

  • Marisa Olson is credited with coining the term in 2008, though it was vaguely in use before, along with surrounding similar terms like "network aware", "wifi-based" and "post-digital".

Descriptions and Definitions[edit]

  • Artworks, artists and art practices that are inherently internet conscious, internet infused and/or internet-cultural.
  • Sometimes these artists are actively participating in physical presentations which are not usually internet-enabled or necessarily production or object focused. Art shows become a "temporary performance of materials" according to artist Kai (Kari) Altmann, with the support of online experiences and media. These shows will be documented and put back online, where they will continue to evolve. In this way the offline experiences become single "nodes" in a network of experiences and contexts. Artist Brad Troemel calls these situations "dual sites". Artist Hito Steyerl refers to this in her definition of "circulationism". Artist Artie Vierkant describes it in his "Image Object" essay.
  • Artists exploring the new meanings of both cultural production and physical production along with different types of image-making, cultural access, circulation, platform politics, codes and mobility in the internet-adapted era.
  • Artists exploring the intercultural and intersectional realities of life, social scenes and work which are now blended with the internet, meaning social media, memes, algorithms, mobility, various supply chains, AI and a massive overflow of "content".
  • Critic Gene Mchugh describes Post Internet as art living in online ecosystems and cultures which is adapting to art institutions and the art world, while also forcing art institutions and the art world to adapt to it.
  • Some curators and writers define Post Internet as related more to cameras, smartphones, laptops and social media, than to the more code-focused history of Internet Art. Many Post Internet artists are interdisciplinary and work in highly connected supply chains and social scenes.
  • Many Post Internet artists also work in music, film/video, photography and writing in addition to their interdisciplinary art practice. Some also work in 3D, coding, graphics and art direction, as well as performative stages.
  • Many Post Internet artists maintain highly active personal websites and social media feeds, along with releases on online host platforms.
  • Many Post Internet artists are also working in genres like Futurisms, New Materialisms, Post-Western, Offsite Art, Dual Site Art, Post-Conceptual, Post-Institution, New World and more.
