Bálint Szombathy (Art Lover, Karen Eliot; 17 October 1950, Pačir, Vojvodina, Yugoslavia) is an artist working with performance, installation, visual poetry, electrographics, post-conceptualism and urban semiology. He is a writer, editor, and art organiser, founding member of the Bosch+Bosch group (Subotica, 1969–1976). He participated in the activities of the "new art practice" in Yugoslavia in the 1970s.

Szombathy has lived in Budapest since 2000. He is the editor of the art magazine Magyar Műhely and director of the gallery of the same name; he organises group exhibitions of Hungarian and foreign artists, writes for leading art magazines and publishes books. In recent years, he has been working on the theme of native land, homeland, i.e. Heimat, exploring the conceptual discrepancies of this term in the light of migrations and movements of people and ethnic entities in the recent past.

In 1969, he and Slavko Matković founded the group Bosch + Bosch, a platform of neo-avant-garde artists from Vojvodina, Serbia and Hungary. The group played an important role in connecting with related movements and artists throughout Europe, particularly through its access to relevant information from the Western world. Szombathy has been working with photography since the late 1960s. He mainly used photography to document his performances and conceptual projects. He worked as a graphics editor for the newspaper Magyar Szó (1974-1985), the magazine Új Symposion (1985-1989) and the newspaper Családi Kör (1993-1999).

Balint Szombathy took part in numerous prestigious international exhibitions in Europe, the USA and Canada, such as Body and the East, After the Wall, Non-Aligned Modernity, and also exhibited in various museums in Europe, such as the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, the Gallery of Modern Art in Ljubljana, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin and others. He has received numerous awards for his work: Lajos Kassák Prize, Paris (1989); Mihály Munkácsy Prize, Budapest (2008); Vladislav Ribnikar Prize, Belgrade (2015); Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, Budapest (2018).
