10,000 Francs Reward: The Contemporary Art Museum, Dead or Alive (2009)

22 August 2019, dusan

“What is the museum’s role? What should be its functions and activities in today’s society? What other operational and organizational models could be proposed to help overcome the modernist position by which the museum, as a repository of artistic essences, can make a universal reality visible in an immanent way? To debate these questions, the Association of Contemporary Art Directors of Spain – ADACE – constituted as a forum for reflection and debate, held in Baeza a conference in which those responsible for Spain’s museums reflected, together with their foreign colleagues, as well as artists and thinkers, on these matters in an idea-sharing session. The results of this meeting are published in this book.”

Mieke Gerritzen, Geert Lovink: Amsterdam Design Manifesto (2019)

21 August 2019, dusan

“When everything is destined to be designed, design disappears into the everyday. We simply don’t see it anymore because it’s everywhere. This is the vanishing act of design. At this moment design registers its redundancy: our products, environments and services have been comprehensively improved. Everything has been designed to perfection and is under a permanent upgrade regime. Within such a paradigm, design is enmeshed with the capitalist logic of reproduction. But this does not come without conflicts, struggles and tensions. Chief among these is the situation of design in a planetary procession toward decay. Our dispense culture prompts a yearning for longevity. The computational compulsion to delete brings alive a desire to retrieve objects, ideas and experiences that refuse obsolescence. Society is growing more aware of sustainability and alert to the depletion of this world. For the ambitious designer, it’s time to take the next step: designing the future as a collective relation attuned to life.”

Andrew Lison, Marcell Mars, Tomislav Medak, Rick Prelinger: Archives (2019)

8 August 2019, dusan

“Archives have become a nexus in the wake of the digital turn. This book sets out to show how expanded archival practices can challenge contemporary conceptions and inform the redistribution of power and resources. Calling for the necessity to reimagine the potentials of archives in practice, the three contributions ask: Can archives fulfill their paradoxical potential as utopian sites in which the analog and the digital, the past and future, and remembrance and forgetting commingle?”
