Πέτρος Παπακωνσταντίνου: Επιστροφή στο μέλλον – Η κρίση του υπαρκτού καπιταλισμού και η αριστερά (2010) [Greek]

Η χειρότερη οικονομική ύφεση από την εποχή του μεσοπολέμου σήμανε το ιδεολογικό κραχ του νεοφιλελευθερισμού, αλλά δεν ανέδειξε καινούριο κοινωνικό υπόδειγμα. Οι μεγάλες δυνάμεις θυμίζουν εμφραγματία ο οποίος μόλις έχει βγει από την εντατική και το πρώτο πράγμα που κάνει είναι να ανάψει τσιγάρο: ενώ η πραγματική ανεργία στις ΗΠΑ αγγίζει το 17,5%, τα μπόνους των golden boys ανέρχονται σε αστρονομικά όρια.

Ανεξάρτητα από τις συγκυριακές διακυμάνσεις της οικονομίας, υποστηρίζει ο Πέτρος Παπακωνσταντίνου, οι μεγαλύτερες ανατροπές βρίσκονται μπροστά μας. Σαν άλλος μαθητευό­μενος μάγος, ο παγκόσμιος καπιταλισμός αδυνατεί να ελέγξει τις τεράστιες δυνάμεις της τρίτης τεχνολογικής επανάστασης -πληροφορική, αυτοματοποίηση, βιοτεχνολογία- που ο ίδιος απελευθέρωσε. Στο γεωπολιτικό επίπεδο, η κρίση επωά­ζει όχι μόνο τη διάρρηξη της παγκοσμιοποίησης, αλλά και το τέλος δύο αιώνων πλανητικής κυριαρχίας του λευκού ανθρώπου, όπως συμβολικά σηματοδότησαν οι βαθιές υποκλίσεις του πρώτου μαύρου προέδρου της Αμερικής στον αυτοκράτορα της Ιαπωνίας και στον ηγέτη της “κομμουνιστικής” Κίνας.

Ξεκινώντας από την αδυναμία της Αριστεράς να επωφεληθεί πολιτικά από την ευνοϊκή συγκυρία, ο συγγραφέας αναζητά μια άμεση απάντηση στην κρίση, ένα στενό δρόμο ανάμεσα σε μια Αριστερά δωρητή σώματος της Σοσιαλδημοκρατίας και σε μια Αριστερά πολιτικό ερημίτη. Παράλληλα, επιστρέφει στα μεγάλα στρατηγικά ερωτήματα που έθεσε η κατάρρευση του 1989-1990, υποστηρίζοντας ότι ο κομμουνισμός δεν μπορεί να νοείται ως καθεστώς, αλλά ως η γραμμή του ορίζοντα, που όσο την πλησιάζουμε, τόσο απομακρύνεται, παραμένει, ωστόσο, αναγκαία για να διατηρεί κανείς τον προσανατολισμό του, ιδίως σε εποχές θύελλας.

Η έκδοση επιχειρεί µια συνεκτική θεώρηση του µεγάλου µετασχηµατισµού που δροµολόγησε ο διεθνής καπιταλισµός τα τελευταία τριάντα χρόνια, µετά το σοκ του Μάη του ’68 και την οικονοµική κρίση της δεκαετίας του ’70, η οποία έθεσε τέλος στον κεϊνσιανό συµβιβασµό του “κοινωνικού κράτους”.

“divanik is a collection of interviews conducted in the period from 2001 to 2004 which represents intersection of research in the field of new technologies, culture and society. Interviews present network of people and organizations that make one part of the contemporary media art and theory scene. New media center_kuda.org monitored those phenomena that have interdisciplinary and intermedial character, and by inviting the significant protagonists in media art and theory the intention was to give to the local public an insight at the happenings in this field.

Research of the media is the research of the history of communication, and communication today is a bio-product of the information age, exchange of valuables in the capitalist coordinate system in which the concepts and ideas are treated as meaningful goods and products. On the other hand communication is also a tool that changes the same coordinate system.

As a communication practice the phenomenon of the interview is immanent to Internet culture. Interview represents concise form of communication and it is a useful instrument in the scientific work as meta-text that follows complex theory or artwork. In the interviews authors present contexts in which they were creating and their points of view and this direct communication through the actual questions presents real-time articulated energetic potential. That is also a chance to analyze and restructure certain topics in the form that couldn’t occur in theoretic and artistic work. Interview is a sublimation of different aspects, overlapping and interdisciplinarity that at a given moment presents unique thinking system.

The development of information and communication technologies also brought along new social ontology that is manifested in the social, political and culture field. Instantaneity of history, accumulation and pace of technological development stipulates momentary reaction and critical analysis.

The goal of these interviews is to critically analyze and present to the wider audience certain art and socio-political phenomena. Within the kuda.read edition the accent is put on pointing out to the expanded referential system inside the new media and culture that spreads from the marginal social practice to academic theory and scientific research.”

Fibreculture Journal 17: Unnatural Ecologies (2011)

Media ecology has always resonated with discussions of digital and networked media. Perhaps this is because the discipline of media ecology has always been so open to transdisciplinary work. The pioneers of media ecology set off very early on the road to transdiscplinary critique that is a key focus for the Fibreculture Journal. Indeed, media ecological critique is often critique in the best sense: the exploration of the limits, not just the errors of thinking, the immersion of thought in real events and practices, and the creation of new ideas appropriate to the present and future of media. All in all, from Innis and McLuhan on, media ecology has provided a generative engine within media thinking and practice. Indeed it has been exemplary thinking as practice.

Yet the leading scholars writing for the Unnatural Ecologies issue do not perform media ecology as we have known it. At times the articles argue with more “traditional” media ecology. Sometimes, they arrive at a new media ecology, having travelled other trajectories that those of traditional media ecology. They are rewriting media ecology, exploring its limits from inside and outside. In the process the Fibreculture Journal believes this issue makes a crucial contribution to thinking about all media from the perspective of digital and networked media. In thinking through the unnatural ecologies that contemporary media make increasingly obvious, the issue challenges us to rethink not only what media are, or what they do, but what they might have been, and what they have done.
